PAYE Modernisation

You may have read previously that the Revenue Commissioners are changing the way employers calculate and report their employee’s tax deductions.

From 1 January 2019 PAYE Modernisation will come into effect. This means that employers will handle employees tax deductions in real-time. This ensures that Revenue will have the most current pay and tax information for employees for each pay period.

The PAYE Modernisation Project will involve the most significant reform of the PAYE system since its introduction in 1960. Employers will need to calculate and report their employees’ pay and deductions as they are being paid. This will make it easier to deduct and pay at the right time the correct amounts of:

  • Income Tax
  • Pay Related Social Insurance
  • Universal Social Charge
  • Local Property Tax

What does this mean for Employees?

Employees will have access to their payroll information such as pay and tax that is submitted to Revenue for each pay period through The Revenue PAYE Anytime online service.

If you have not registered online with Revenue you can do so by using the “register now” function on the revenue website.

Through the ‘Jobs and Pension Services’ section on the PAYE Anytime online service employees can allocate their tax credits between various employments.

The well-known forms P.45 and P.60 will no longer be used. The P.60 will be replaced with an “end of year statement” for employees. This will be available to employees through their PAYE Anytime account.

Tax deduction cards will be abolished and replaced with a Revenue payroll notification (RPN).

Revenue will receive a breakdown of taxable Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) income in real-time. Tax credits and rate bands will be updated to account for additional income and updated Revenue payroll notification (RPN) will be issued.

Please note you should register your Comfort Keepers employment with Revenue in a timely fashion. It is important to do so to ensure that your payroll calculations are treated correctly by your employer and to avoid a situation of emergency tax. Once you have registered with Revenue online you can register your employment through the Revenue online service.
