After a mini heatwave and continued good weather, it looks like rain is coming back to us here in Ireland. Farmers won’t mind a day of rain at the moment and the gardeners amongst us will be pleased too but let’s hope the sunshine returns next week. If you are looking for things to do for the next few wet days, here’s some suggestions.
‘Rainy Day’ Activities for Adults in Ireland
Painting Pottery
This isn’t just for children but could be a lovely activity for young and old to do together. Embrace your artistic side and paint some pottery. Pieces start from €12 and the Artworks Cafe have a lovely assortment to choose from.
Relive Sport
Relive some of your favourite sporting memories and see where it all happens by visiting the GAA Museum at Croke Park for a great day out. Visit the dressing rooms, sit in the stands, hear the stories, relive memories and finish it off with a cup of tea in the cafe.
A Chocolate Experience
Learn more about chocolate, do the chocolate tour, decorate chocolate, taste chocolate, take a cookery class, it is all possible at Butlers Chocolates in Dublin. If that’s not a nice way to spend a rainy day, I don’t know what is!
A Museum Day
Whether you live east or west of the country, Dublin’s National Museums are accessible as Dublin is home to three of them and Mayo boasts one. All have free admission. Many of the county museums are also free. The mining museum in Kilkenny’s Discovery Park, located at Castlecomer is well worth a look too.
Swimming
Well, at least you will get wet in comfort in a swimming pool. It’s a lovely way to spend an hour on a rainy day, especially as you work up an appetite and go to enjoy a scone and coffee afterwards.
Some Geography and History
When people think of the Burren in Co. Clare, they tend to think of rare plants and fine weather but there’s much more to do there if the weather is inclement. The Burren Centre is a lovely place to spend an afternoon – visit the exhibition to learn about the geography and history of The Burren and visit the tea rooms afterwards for some scrumptious cake.
Reading
Visit your local library to check out some of the latest recommended reads. See if they have any of the bestsellers in stock. Unravelling Oliver by debut Irish writer Liz Nugent is on my list at the moment and is supposed to be excellent.
