What is Mobility Support?

Understanding Mobility Changes

As people age, changes in mobility can affect daily life and overall well-being. Some individuals may experience a gradual reduction in their ability to move safely and comfortably, making everyday tasks more challenging.

Older adults with mobility challenges may be more vulnerable to sudden health changes due to factors such as infections, new medications, falls, or dehydration. These changes can impact both physical and mental well-being.

A recent study in The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) found that 12.7% of adults aged 50+ and 21.5% of people aged 65+ in Ireland experience mobility-related difficulties, highlighting the importance of proactive support and care.

Recognising Signs of Mobility Challenges

The presence of one or more of the following symptoms may indicate that a person requires additional support to maintain their independence and well-being:

  • Increased risk of falls – Sudden loss of balance, frequent stumbles, or needing extra support when walking.

  • Reduced movement – Difficulty standing up, walking longer distances, or getting in and out of chairs or bed.

  • Confusion or disorientation – Changes in awareness or memory that may affect movement and coordination.

  • Changes in continence – Increased difficulty managing toileting needs, which can impact confidence and independence.

  • Medication-related side effects – Certain medications can affect mobility, balance, or awareness, increasing the risk of falls.

Mobility Assessments and Personalised Support Plans

We take a person-centred approach to mobility support, ensuring that each individual receives care tailored to their needs. It is often recommended that a mobility assessment be carried out by a healthcare professional, such as a physiotherapist or occupational therapist.

Comfort Keepers provides practical support to help individuals implement mobility-related recommendations from consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, Public Health Nurses (PHNs), and other professionals.

Our Mobility Support Services include:

  • Assisting with mobility aids such as hoists, walking frames, and transfer supports

  • Encouraging movement and gentle activity to maintain mobility and independence

  • Helping manage daily routines, including getting in and out of bed or chairs safely

  • Providing reminders for time-specific medication that supports mobility and overall health

Monitoring Changes in Mobility and Wellbeing

Our carer teams play a vital role in recognising any changes in a person’s mobility or overall health during daily visits. If any concerns arise, we promptly communicate with the relevant healthcare professionals or family members to ensure appropriate support is provided as soon as possible.

Timely intervention can help prevent further mobility challenges and reduce the need for hospitalisation, supporting individuals to remain safe and comfortable in their own homes.
