What is Motor Neuron Disease?
Motor Neuron disease (MND) is a condition that affects the nerves in a person’s brain and spine which results in a progressive loss of function. There are three types of MND:
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – is the most common form of MND and accounts for 90% of cases, progressive
- Muscular Atrophy (PMA) – accounts for 5% of MND cases, and
- Progressive Lateral Sclerosis – accounts for 5% of cases.
MND can lead to weakness and loss of muscle tone, increasing loss of mobility in the limbs and difficulty with speech, swallowing and breathing. Although MND is a progressive, non-curable illness with healthcare advances, the quality of life of a person with MND has improved in recent years.
