Our Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care Services
Dementia is caused by different diseases of the brain.
These diseases affect the parts of the brain which are normally used for thinking, memory, and language, impairing a person's ability to carry out everyday tasks.
Over 64,000 people in Ireland are currently living with dementia.
Every year in Ireland, there are 11,000 new cases of dementia, meaning 30 people will be diagnosed with it today.
The condition
There are many conditions which cause dementia. Alzheimer’s is the most common one. The other types of Dementia include Vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and Frontotemporal dementia.
Sometimes, a person may experience a mix of two types of dementia, and this is called mixed dementia. Others are diagnosed with dementia but it may not be possible to confirm its specific cause.
Alzheimer’s – The Most Common Cause of Dementia
Alzheimer’s accounts for over half of all dementia cases. It is characterised by the build-up of proteins in the brain, which forms plaques and tangles that stop the brain from working as it should.
Knowing the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia can be vital for families seeking the right care options for their loved ones.

Getting stuck for words;
